Title: Co-founder, NY Tech Meetup

Describe the moment when you decided to become an angel: Natalia (from Pipeline Fellowship) came up to me at a Change The Ratio event where Rachel Sklar was interviewing Fred Wilson, said she was forming a group of women to invest in a women-led, socially good company, and asked if I’d be interested in being in her first group.

What investments have you made since graduating from Pipeline Fellowship? *Woman founder!

Company: PhilanTech
Founder: Dahna Goldstein*

What are your investment deal-breakers? Lack of confidence in the founder.

What types of companies do you look to invest in? Early-stage tech.

What do you look for in an entrepreneur/founding team? Passion, drive, a great entrepreneur and developer combo team.

How has your background played a role in your angel investing? I’ve been looking at entrepreneurs pitch since the late 1990’s, first through New York New Media Association running their venture conference, and then co-founding NY Tech Meetup and seeing 8-10 tech demos every month for eight years.

One piece of advice to an angel-in-training? Don’t invest solely for the money. If you don’t love the process and helping to nurture the entrepreneurs, advising them as they build their companies, you shouldn’t do it. Be in it for the long-haul, not a quick exit.

One piece of advice to an entrepreneur looking for capital? Show your passion as honestly as you can.

How would you define a for-profit social venture? A company that puts its socially good mission on par with making money.

Favorite quotation?
It is better, as far as getting the vote is concerned, I believe, to have a small, united group than an immense debating society. ―Alice Paul

Random fact? I love bulldogs.
